Camellia House and its Three Seasons of Tea

The Main Season (November – May)

The Japanese Tea Ceremony is celebrated throughout the year. From November to May, the RO, or hearth is used. Close to the centre of the room, the guests enjoy the heat of the coals. The Tea Bowls, known as Chawan, are deep and thick-walled, allowing them to preserve the heat of the Tea as long as possible. Guests enjoy the texture of the bowls and the warmth in their hands. The Tea flowers in the alcove at this time are restrained and minimalist to echo the situation outdoors. At Camellia House we use the Winter Room with its RO insert to demonstrate this season.

The Transition Seasons (May – June; September – October)

From May to June, the weather warms and it is natural for the guests to enjoy the coming summer heat, away from the cast-iron kettle hearth. The FURO (Hearth) is slightly open to allow a glimpse of the glowing coals on chilly days. A sensitivity to the seasons and care for the guest demonstrates the thoughtfulness of the host. At Camellia House, we use the Winter Room's open FURO for this season.

The Summer Season (July – August)

In the heat of summer, with the stillness of the air, the humidity and singing cicadas – it is important for the guest to feel as refreshed as possible during Tea. For this reason, the cast-iron Tea Hearth is different – with only a small window for the Host to examine the condition of the coals. The Hearth is set as far away from the guest as possible and Tea and sweets are served in wide-brimmed bowls designed to cool the Tea quickly. In the alcove, airy lacquered baskets hold a variety of native wildflowers blooming in the Host's garden.

At this time, Camellia Hosts enjoy serving Tea in either the Summer room, or Tsubaki-An, the outdoor Tea house
